FWOTD: fuckless

Today’s new entry:

fuckless adjective lacking in sexual activity.

Simple, but I’m fond of this. The earliest example is 1955, from J. P. Donleavy’s great novel The Ginger Man. Other cites come from Norman Mailer, Ursula K. Le Guin, Shere Hite, William Gass, and others, making this a particularly well-rounded entry in terms of quotations.

This is a sample definition of one of the many (over 120) new entries from the third edition of The F-Word. In the time leading up to publication, I will be featuring one such entry a day. In the book itself, these definitions will be supplemented with a number of quotations showing the use of the word or phrase (which is the whole point of a historical dictionary of this sort). In other words, this is only a teaser!

Have you ever seen “unfuckable” as a noun (That jerk is an unfuckable)?

I’ve only seen it on a Hash House Harriers message board about 10 years ago, but I liked it. Someone was categorizing some people in the social running/drinking club as so loathsome that they were unfuckable.

  2. Good luck with your publication! I almost hate to say it, but the F-word is part of my vocabulary and knowing more about it will extend my limited f-word vocabulary!

@sub: Yes, I do have some evidence for unfuckable n., going back to 1972. But I decided not to put it in in the end; it was very rare. I don’t recall it from my own H3 days, either. There is of course an entry for the adjective, which is on the list for a future FWOTD post!
@Cheryl: No reason to hate to say it! It’s an important part of the language!

I have gotten away with using unfoqqable as a screen name for video gaming and certain message boards.

I’ve heard today’s entry used as a perjorative that has to do with lack of courage or initiative (as in having no balls). My personal favorite is, “You fuckless wonder!”
