1952 A. Budrys in Planet Stories Nov. 111/1 Newspaper publicity for a worldcon is ludicrous.
1959 R. Eney Fancyclopaedia II (1979) 34 1939 NYCon I was held in New York 2-4 July under the auspices of New Fandom as the World Science Fiction Convention, "First" being added later. Annual Worldcons were not at first contemplated. From the 1979 facsimile edition. Note that ‘Worldcon’ is a trademark owned by the World Science Fiction Society, and has an initial cap.
1969 H. Warner All our Yesterdays 11 For a person with reclusive tendencies, Lovecraft showed impressive stamina and gregariousness at ayjay meetings. His death undoubtedly deprived the first fannish worldcons of a professional focal point.
1976 S. Wood Propellor Beanie in Algol Summer 24/1 As such it attracted 604 attending members, some 500 of whom were Australians who had never heard of worldcons or fandom–who probably didn't understand why some 1,400 other fans, most of them North Americans, paid to become supporting members of a convention they couldn't attend.
1979 Sci. Fiction Rev. Jan. 33/3 And so on. You won't find very much of this at a worldcon or a large regional because only a fraction of the attendees are hardcore fans.
1990 Thrust Winter 4/1 It's a long story, and one that includes utter exhaustion, a new staff, too much travel, a Worldcon, too little money, and?the recent purchase of a Hewlett Packard Laserjet [sic] IIP and Bitstream soft fonts.
1991 Sci. Fiction Chron. May 6/1 It's only 4 months until Chicon V, this year's worldcon.
1992 H. Warner, Jr. Wealth of Fable 339 Alarm over the way attendance increased at worldcons in the 1950s inspired some committees in the 1960s to soft pedal or ban advance publicity for the worldcon in the host city, in order to minimize walk-in congoers.
1993 Locus Oct. iv. 42/1 My second meeting with Locus was during a worldcon some years later.
2001 Sci. Fiction Chron. July 39/2 From that first small gathering grew the annual Philcon, the first worldcons, and much else in our microcosm.
